A little girl's first birthday is a big deal. For years, we have commemorated the occasion with a dedicated photo session. I wanted to take the experience a step further. Today's technology allows photographers to be more flexible than ever, and I took advantage of that flexibility for Kate's first birthday.

We did a session on location for traditional portraits, as well as a Playdate session for Kate's party. The finished product is the coolest part. It's a complete multi-media package, including a 10 page album and fusion video. What's a fusion video, you ask? It's a combination of still photography and video edited together with music. I love it, and think it is crazy fun.  Check out the video and album below.

"My heart just melted...love these pics!!!"
That is a quote from Nancy T.. She was commenting on her grandson's nine month photos from Black Dog Photo Co..  Go ahead, try and tell me my job's not awesome.

Thanks for the props Nancy, you made my day. Here's some photos from the session.

PS     How sweet are those hats? I think one of those would look awful nice on a golf course...on my head.

I am so excited! Black Dog Photo Co. just delivered a cool family portrait album. I've been wanting to share it with everyone so badly, but had to wait for the clients to get the first peek.  We can custom design a family portrait album from any session, and prices start at just $15 per page.  It's a great item to pair with our current family photography special:  Book your session by June 1st and receive your session at no charge.  Check out Michael's album and the special below.

PS     I think one of the ultimate "dad" things to do is taking your family to a baseball game. We did just that last night for the Akron Aeros home opener.  Dad was overstimulated, and Tommy ended up looking like the stereotype of a kid at the ballgame (foam finger, new hat, baseball, hot dog...).  Check out the photos on the Black Dog Photo Co. Facebook page. What's your favorite part of a ballgame?

Every year I bake a Challah Bread for Easter Sunday.  It is wonderful to share with family, and has become a fun tradition.  This year, it was made even more special since my son Tommy dyed the eggs for the decoration.  I hope everyone out there has a hoppy Easter!

Has Photoshop changed wedding photography, and for that matter, all photography?  In a word, YES!  While earning my degree in Photo-Illustration from Kent State University, I shot almost exclusivlely 4x5 film with a view camera.  The quality of that format is unsurpassed, but it's more than a little unwieldy for wedding photography.  If you don't know what I mean, check out the photo of my 4x5 camera below...
Today's digital cameras offer resolution approaching the level of large format film, and are infinitely more versatile.  This versatility has created the largest shift in a photographers life.  We used to shoot a job, send the film off to the lab, and get back a finished product.  Modern photographers have control over the entire process, from capture to output.  Which brings us, finally, to Photoshop.
Photoshop has added another layer of creativity for photographers.  The tools it offers can help shape the final image into the photo the creator had invisioned when the shutter clicked.
Wanna see what I mean?  Check out the before/after image of my buddy Clint fly fishing below.  It was a pretty dreary morning, but that's not what I had in mind when I took the photo.  Thanks to Photoshop, I was able to execute my vision for the image.  Cool.

PS     I think Photoshop is kind of like margarita's.  Super tasty, but easy to over do...

PPS   I'm not huge fan of a regular margarita, but I do like to make them with pureed watermelon...keeps me cool and refreshed while manning the grill on a hot day.  Wow, that sounds nice.  What are you looking forward to this summer?  Share it on the Black Dog Facebook page, cheers!
